Painting New Plasterboard in Cardiff
Extensions and Loft Conversions Across Cardiff
Cardiff is in the middle of a long wave of rear extensions and loft conversions. Canton, Cathays, and Roath terraces are being extended into the garden almost street by street.
All of this produces new plasterboard that needs painting correctly. Plasterboard painted without the right preparation produces an uneven result: tape joints and screw positions show through the finish, and the surface absorbs paint unevenly.
Correct Preparation is the Foundation
We prepare plasterboard correctly before any paint is applied. That means skimming tape joints, filling screw positions, and applying the right primer system.
The finish should be flat and consistent under light, not just under normal room conditions. Our interior painting service covers this across all room types in Cardiff properties.
Serving All Cardiff Postcodes
We work across Canton, Cathays, Roath, Whitchurch, Llanishen, and all Cardiff postcodes. Whether it is a single new partition wall or a full rear kitchen-diner extension, we carry out the same standard of preparation.

Plasterboard Painting Services

New Extensions in Canton, Cathays, and Roath
Victorian terraces throughout Canton, Cathays, and Roath are being extended into the garden at pace. A rear kitchen-diner extension typically involves new plasterboard on the back wall, ceiling, and partition walls between the new and existing space.
New plasterboard needs a mist coat before any finish is applied. We carry out this preparation as standard on every new-plaster job, sealing the porous surface so the finish goes on evenly.
Loft Conversions in Whitchurch and Llanishen
Loft conversions in Whitchurch and Llanishen semis produce irregular wall geometries (sloped ceilings, knee walls, gable ends) and are almost always plasterboard throughout. These rooms need careful preparation, particularly at the joints between different board planes.
We tape, fill, and feather all joints before priming. Screw positions are filled flush and sanded. The result is a wall that reads as flat and consistent, even in a loft room with awkward angles and difficult lighting.
Re-Plasterboarded Walls Following Repairs
Damp treatment, structural work, or pipe repairs often result in sections of plasterboard being replaced in older Cardiff properties. Matching the existing painted finish is the challenge.
New board primed and painted correctly can be made to blend with the surrounding wall. We take care with this preparation to avoid visible patches in the final finish.
Feature Walls on Plasterboard
Plasterboard surfaces are well suited to bold colour treatments and specialist finishes. Preparation standards for feature walls need to be higher, particularly if a mid-sheen or satin finish is specified.
See our feature wall painting page for detail on bold colour finishes, limewash, and accent wall treatments on plasterboard surfaces.
Ceiling Painting in New Rooms
New plasterboard ceilings in extensions and loft conversions require the same mist coat preparation as walls. Cutting in at the wall-ceiling junction is more demanding in loft rooms with sloped sections and knee walls.
See our ceiling painting page for detail on ceiling finishes across Cardiff properties.
Here’s How It Works
1. Assessment
We inspect the plasterboard surface, noting the age of the board, whether it has been plastered or skimmed, and any areas where joints or fixings are visible.
2. Joint and Fixings Preparation
Tape joints are skimmed and sanded flat. Screw positions are filled and sanded. Any board damage or high spots are addressed before anything is applied.
3. Mist Coat or Specialist Primer
New plasterboard or freshly skimmed surfaces receive a diluted mist coat or a dedicated new-plaster primer. This seals the porous surface and prevents the finish from absorbing unevenly.
4. Two Finish Coats
The agreed paint system is applied in two coats. Cutting in is done first, then rolling walls and ceiling. Each coat is allowed to dry fully before the next.
5. Inspection
We check surfaces under raking light to identify any areas that need touching in. Touch-ups are completed before we leave.

Plasterboard Painting Costs in Cardiff
Prices below are estimates only. Every job is different. Call 029 2271 0084 for a precise quote.
Typical Price Ranges
- Single room in an extension (Canton, Roath, approx 20sqm of walls and ceiling): £280 to £450
- Loft conversion room (irregular geometry, Whitchurch semi): £350 to £550
- Full rear extension including kitchen walls and ceiling: £450 to £750
Joint and Fixing Preparation
A poorly finished board with visible tape joints and many screw positions takes more preparation time. The goal is a flat result and this work cannot be rushed.
Room Geometry
Loft rooms with sloped ceilings and knee walls take longer to cut in and roll than straightforward box rooms. This affects the overall labour cost.
Paint Specification
Matt emulsions show surface variation less than mid-sheen finishes. If a satin or eggshell finish is specified for kitchen walls, preparation standards need to be higher because these finishes are less forgiving. See our home renovation page for more on finish specification.
