Here’s How It Works

1. Assessment

We inspect the plasterboard surface, noting the age of the board, whether it has been plastered or skimmed, and any areas where joints or fixings are visible.

2. Joint and Fixings Preparation

Tape joints are skimmed and sanded flat. Screw positions are filled and sanded. Any board damage or high spots are addressed before anything is applied.

3. Mist Coat or Specialist Primer

New plasterboard or freshly skimmed surfaces receive a diluted mist coat or a dedicated new-plaster primer. This seals the porous surface and prevents the finish from absorbing unevenly.

4. Two Finish Coats

The agreed paint system is applied in two coats. Cutting in is done first, then rolling walls and ceiling. Each coat is allowed to dry fully before the next.

5. Inspection

Plasterboard Painting FAQs

What is a mist coat and does my new plasterboard need one?

A mist coat is a diluted first coat, typically emulsion thinned with water or a dedicated primer, applied to new or freshly skimmed plasterboard. Standard emulsion applied directly to new plaster produces an uneven result and can pull away from the surface. The mist coat seals the surface so the finish coat bonds properly and goes on consistently.

Can I paint plasterboard without plastering it first?

You can, but the result is rarely as good. Unplastered plasterboard has a paper face that shows board joints and screw positions clearly through a painted finish. For rooms in rear Cardiff extensions used as living spaces, plasterboard should be skimmed before painting to achieve a smooth result. We can advise on which approach is appropriate for your situation.

My Canton extension was completed three months ago. Is the plaster dry enough to paint?

Plaster typically needs four to six weeks to dry before painting, though this depends on the thickness and the conditions in the room. Three months is usually sufficient. We check moisture levels at the assessment stage and advise if additional drying time is needed.

The builder has left visible tape joints in my Roath extension. Can you fix these before painting?
