Why Choose Us

Why Choose Primrose Decor

A short list of things to check, separating what the decorator can decide from what the council decides.

Approvals Checked First

A conservation area can control colours and materials, and a listed building adds more rules on top. These are checked before any finish is chosen.

Wall Type Checked First

Powdery, soft or crumbling plaster can be a sign of lime. Where lime is confirmed, a breathable paint is the right choice.

Windows and Woodwork Prepared Properly

Sash windows are checked to see if they still open and close. Failing paint is stripped back to sound wood, and any rot or movement in the frame is flagged before new paint goes on.

Lead Paint Handled Cautiously

Paint from before 1960 is treated as a possible lead risk until it has been tested. A safe method is agreed before any suspect surface is touched.

Approvals To Check

What Should You Check Before Painting a Listed or Conservation-Area House Exterior?

Before you change the outside of a Victorian house, find out whether it is listed or in a conservation area. That decides what you are allowed to change.

A conservation area can control colours and materials even if your house is not listed itself. A listed building has extra rules on top of that.

Ask Cardiff Council to confirm the status of your property first. Do this before you choose any exterior colour or material, not after.

Once you know the status, see exterior painting for how outside work is planned.

Lime Plaster

How Do You Tell If Your Walls Are Lime Plaster, and What Paint Suits Them?

Many Victorian houses have lime plaster or lime render, not the gypsum plaster used today. Lime lets moisture out, so it needs a breathable paint. Sealed modern paint can trap that moisture in the wall and cause blistering or damp patches.

Powdery, soft or crumbling plaster can be a sign of lime, but the only sure way is to have the wall tested before a paint system is chosen. For how the paint and preparation work, see our guide to painting a Victorian house.

Sash Windows

How Should Sash Windows and Original Woodwork Be Prepared?

Check the sash windows before anyone picks up a brush. They should still slide up and down, and the cords or weights should still work.

Paint that is flaking or failing is stripped back to sound wood, not painted over. If there is rot or the frame has moved, that is flagged and dealt with before new paint goes on.

Lead Paint Safety

How Is Old Lead Paint Handled Safely?

Paint on a Victorian house built before 1960 may contain lead. Assume it does until a test says otherwise.

Sanding or scraping old paint without care can release lead dust into the air. A decorator should test first and agree a safe method before touching any suspect surface.

Cardiff Rules

Which Cardiff Conservation Rules Could Affect Your Choice of Finish?

Cardiff has 27 conservation areas and around 1,000 listed buildings, so two Victorian houses in the city may face different rules. Some Article 4 areas add further limits on top of the usual controls.

Primrose Decor connects owners of period properties in Cardiff with a local decorator. Older houses that are not Victorian are covered under period property painting.

What Should You Ask Cardiff Council Before Choosing an Exterior Finish?

Ask whether your address is inside a conservation area, and whether the house itself is listed. Both answers can change which colours and materials are allowed.

What Should You Confirm About Your Own House Before Comparing Quotes?

Find out your property’s status and whether an Article 4 restriction applies. If a decorator quotes on the wrong assumption, it wastes your time and theirs. Then read how to compare quotes.

Colours And Finishes

Which Colours and Finishes Suit Your House and Its Rules?

Choose the colour after you know the rules, not before. A conservation area or a listed building can rule out some colours or finishes completely.

Within those limits, most Victorian houses still leave you real choice. Once the wall type and any formal rules are confirmed, a decorator can show you paints that will work.

To get a quote for a Victorian house in Cardiff, call Primrose Decor on 029 2271 0084 before you choose a finish. Ask for the checks that separate the decorator’s decisions from the council’s.
