Fence Painting Services in Cardiff
Timber Lap Panel Fencing
Lap panels are the most common fence type across Cardiff’s terrace gardens. They take paint and stain well but need preparation first. Loose nails are secured and damaged sections assessed before any coating goes on.
We apply a clean base coat and a second finish coat in the chosen colour. Coverage is thorough on both sides where accessible. Timber treated this way will typically go four to six years before needing attention again.
Close-Board Fencing
Close-board panels are more robust than lap panels and hold coatings well. They are common on the boundary fences of semis across Whitchurch and Heath.
Preparation is the same as for lap panels: clean, dry, and sound before anything is applied.
Rendered Garden Walls
Rendered boundary walls are common in Cathays and parts of Roath where Victorian terrace gardens back onto each other. These walls are usually older render, sometimes lime-based, and require a different approach to timber.
We use masonry paint or a suitable exterior wall coating. Loose or hollow render is flagged before work begins. See our masonry painting page for detail on wall coatings.
Gates and Timber Garden Structures
Garden gates, pergolas, trellis, and wooden sheds are treated as part of a fence project where they form part of the same boundary. Consistent colour across the fence line and gate makes a significant difference to how a Cardiff garden looks from the house.
For shed painting specifically, call 029 2271 0084 and we can include it in the same visit.
Exterior Painting for the Whole Property
Fence painting pairs well with a full exterior repaint. If you are also having the house exterior painted, we can include the fence and boundary walls in the same scope.
See our exterior painting page for the full exterior service, or our deck painting and staining page if you have a deck alongside the fence.

How Fence Painting Works
1. Site Assessment
We visit and check the fence panels, wall condition, and any timber structures. We note rot, loose sections, and surfaces that need repair before painting starts.
2. Preparation
Moss, lichen, and loose material are cleaned back. Badly degraded panels are flagged. Timber is allowed to dry and green algae on north-facing fences is treated before work begins.
3. Base Coat
A penetrating fence treatment or base coat is applied depending on the product system chosen. This seals the timber and gives the finish coat a proper bond.
4. Finish Coat
The second coat goes on once the base is dry. We work carefully around planted borders and garden surfaces to avoid overspray and drips.
5. Tidy-Up
All masking and protection is removed. The garden is left clean.

Fence Painting Costs in Cardiff
Prices below are estimates only. Every property is different. Call 029 2271 0084 for a precise quote.

Small Rear Terrace Garden
Canton and Roath terrace gardens with 10 to 15 metres of lap panels typically cost £150 to £280, including preparation and two coats.
Semi-Detached Side and Rear Run
Whitchurch and Heath properties with 20 to 35 metres of fencing typically cost £280 to £480.
Front and Rear Boundary with Gate
Mixed timber and rendered wall boundaries with a gate typically cost £350 to £600 depending on condition and access.
What Affects the Price
Timber condition is the main cost driver. Heavily weathered panels take more product and time. Rotten sections need replacing before painting, which is a separate cost.
Surface type also matters: rendered walls need masonry paint rather than fence stain. Double-sided access speeds up the job and reduces cost compared to single-sided access.
