Why Paint Your Cardiff Kitchen Cabinets
A Fraction of Replacement Cost
A full kitchen replacement in Cardiff costs between £5,000 and £20,000 or more depending on the spec. Cabinet painting transforms the look and feel of the same kitchen for a fraction of that.
It is also a natural fit within a broader home renovation project where multiple areas of the property are being updated at the same time.
Best Results on Original Kitchens
A 1930s fitted kitchen in a Whitchurch semi often has solid timber cabinets that are structurally sound but tired. Repainting these in a considered colour, properly prepared and finished, produces a result that looks better than many new kitchens.
It also extends the life of the existing fit-out by ten or more years.
Period Kitchens Respond Particularly Well
Edwardian kitchens in Pontcanna frequently have original or period-style cabinetry with substantial timber doors and frames. These respond particularly well to professional painting.
The profile detail, the solid feel of the doors, the hinges: all of this reads well with a quality painted finish.

Solid Timber and MDF Cabinet Painting

Solid Timber Cabinets
Solid timber cabinet doors and frames are the best candidate for painting. The timber is stable, the surface takes paint well, and the result is durable.
Preparation on solid timber involves cleaning thoroughly, sanding back the existing surface to a key, and filling any minor surface damage. We apply an appropriate primer for the substrate, and assess on site whether a full strip is needed or whether careful preparation is sufficient.
MDF and Shaker-Style Doors
MDF doors are common in fitted kitchens installed from the 1990s onwards. They paint well but require specific preparation. The face is sealed to prevent the paint absorbing unevenly. Edges are more porous and are treated separately.
Without this step, edges absorb more paint than the face and a different sheen level across the door becomes visible on close inspection. We prime MDF correctly before any finish coat, which is why our results look uniform and consistent across every door face.
Carcasses and Plinths
Cabinet carcasses and plinths are often in a different material to the doors and require separate consideration. We include these where specified.
In some kitchens, painting the carcasses as well as the doors produces a fully unified result. In others, new plinths are a better option. We advise on this at the quote stage.
Kitchen Cabinet Finish Options
Matt
A contemporary flat finish, currently popular across Pontcanna and Cardiff Bay new-builds. Shows surface marks more than satin, so better suited to lower-traffic cabinet areas.
Satin
The most practical choice for kitchen use. A low sheen that is easy to wipe down and hides minor surface variation. Our most commonly specified finish for kitchen cabinets.
Eggshell
Between matt and satin. Works well on period-style kitchens in Edwardian and inter-war properties where a softer finish suits the character of the space.

We can colour match most paint ranges. If you have a specific colour from Farrow and Ball, Little Greene, or another paint brand, we can match to that reference. Clients painting their kitchen cabinets often combine this with our door painting service to carry a consistent colour story from the front of the house through to the kitchen.
How Kitchen Cabinet Painting Works
1. Assessment
We inspect the kitchen. We note the door material, carcass condition, current finish, and any repairs needed. We discuss colour and finish preferences.
2. Doors Removed
Cabinet doors are removed and laid flat for painting. This is the correct way to achieve a flat, run-free finish. Doors painted in situ rarely achieve the same result.
3. Preparation
All surfaces are cleaned, degreased, and sanded. Filler is applied where needed. Edges and porous sections are sealed before priming.
4. Priming
The appropriate primer for the substrate is applied. Allowed to cure fully before the finish coat.
5. Finish Coats
Two coats of the agreed finish, applied flat. Doors are allowed to cure fully before rehinging.
6. Rehang and Adjust
Doors are rehung and adjusted so they sit correctly. Hardware is replaced. The kitchen is left clean and fully operational.

Small Kitchen
10 to 14 doors in good condition: £600 to £950. Suitable for compact fitted kitchens with a well-bonded existing finish requiring lighter preparation.
Medium Kitchen
15 to 22 doors, standard preparation: £900 to £1,400. Covers the majority of Cardiff terraced and semi-detached homes.
Large Kitchen
Large kitchen or significant preparation required: £1,300 to £2,000+. Includes kitchens with peeling paint, water damage around the sink area, or grease-contaminated surfaces requiring more preparation work.

Cabinet painting costs significantly less than replacement and produces a better result on well-built original cabinetry. Profile complexity, the number of drawer fronts, and the condition of the existing finish all affect the price. Preparation is the main cost factor.
