Front Door Painting Services in Cardiff
Cardiff’s Victorian and Edwardian terraces have solid timber panel doors with original mouldings, glazed fanlights, and raised panels. We work on exterior painting across Cardiff, and front doors are one of the most visible elements we handle.
Original Timber Doors
Cardiff’s Victorian and Edwardian terraces typically have solid timber panel doors, often with original mouldings and raised panels. Preparing these properly means working back through existing paint layers to assess the condition of the timber underneath.
Where build-up is heavy, we use a chemical stripper or heat gun to get back to a sound surface. Old filler that has shrunk and cracked is removed and replaced. Any timber that has softened or degraded is treated or repaired before any coating is applied. Prime coat, undercoat, and two finish coats in the correct product for exterior joinery.
Conservation Area Colours
Pontcanna and Llandaff both contain conservation areas. Colour changes to front doors on properties within these areas can require approval from Cardiff Council. Repainting in a similar or matching colour typically does not require consent.
We advise on this at the quote stage. If you are unsure, we can help you identify whether your property falls within a conservation area before any colour decision is made.
Glazed Panels and Fanlight Frames
Victorian and Edwardian front doors often carry stained glass panels or coloured glass in the upper section and fanlight. The timber framing around these panels requires careful masking and precise cutting-in.
Overpaint onto glass is not acceptable on a period door. We mask thoroughly and work carefully around original glazing on every job.
Composite and uPVC Doors
Composite and uPVC front doors in Cardiff’s post-war suburbs and new-build estates can be painted with the right primer system. Specialist adhesion primers bond to the surface before the finish coat.
The result suits doors where the original colour no longer works with the house. We discuss options and product choice at the quote stage. We also offer garage door painting using the same specialist primer systems. For wider work on the property exterior, see our window frame painting page.

How We Paint Your Front Door
1. Assessment
We inspect the door, frame, and surrounds. We note paint build-up, timber condition, loose glazing beads, and any repairs needed.
2. Preparation
Existing paint is assessed. Heavy build-up is stripped back. Loose or cracked filler is removed and replaced. Timber is sanded and cleaned before priming.
3. Priming
Bare timber receives an appropriate primer. Previously painted timber in sound condition receives an adhesion coat where needed.
4. Undercoat
One coat of matching undercoat builds colour depth and seals the surface before the finish coat.
5. Finish Coats
Two coats of the agreed finish, brushed in the direction of the grain or panel. Each coat is allowed to harden before the next.
6. Glazing and Hardware
Glass is cleaned of any overpaint. Hardware is replaced. The door is inspected in good light before we close the job.

Front Door Painting on Cardiff’s Period Properties

Visible from the Street
A Cardiff front door is often the most visible feature of the house. On a Victorian terrace in Pontcanna or an Edwardian bay-front in Llandaff, it sits at the end of a tiled path, flanked by original tiled or rendered reveal, visible from the street.
A badly executed repaint shows clearly at this distance. Brush marks, uneven colour, runs in the gloss, poorly cut edges around glazing are all visible from the pavement. Period doors deserve proper preparation and proper finishing.
Doors Repainted Many Times Over
We work on original Victorian and Edwardian joinery throughout Cardiff. We understand what preparation is required on old timber. We work regularly on doors that have been repainted many times over the years.
For wider exterior work on period properties, see our period property painting page.
Oil-Based Gloss on Period Timber
Oil-based gloss remains the benchmark for front door durability on period timber. Water-based alternatives are available where paint fumes are a concern. We discuss the options at the quote stage.
For the full scope of exterior work we carry out, see our exterior painting page.
Front Door Painting Costs in Cardiff
Prices below are estimates only. Every property is different. Call 029 2271 0084 for a precise quote.
- Single timber door, sound condition, no stripping: £180 to £280, including frame and architrave
- Victorian panel door with significant build-up, strip and prepare: £280 to £420
- Door with fanlight frame and glazed side panels: £350 to £550 depending on glazing complexity
- Composite or uPVC door, specialist system: £150 to £220
Paint Build-Up
A door that has been repainted a dozen times needs careful stripping to get a flat result. This adds significant time to the job and is the most common reason a quote comes in higher than expected.
Timber Condition
Soft or degraded timber needs treatment before priming. Rot in sill areas is common on Cardiff period properties. We identify this at the assessment stage and factor it into the quote before work begins.
Glazing Complexity
Stained glass panels and original fanlights take longer to mask and cut in around. The time adds up on a door with multiple glazed sections.
If you are also considering door painting for internal doors or wider exterior painting work, we can quote all items together.
