Window Frame Painting Services

Victorian Sash Windows

Timber sash windows are stripped back to sound material. Paint build-up on meeting rails and runners is addressed so the sash can move freely after the job is complete.

Rot in sill sections is common on south-facing Cardiff terraces. We identify and treat or repair any degraded timber before painting begins. Oil-based primer on bare timber, appropriate undercoat, then two coats of exterior quality gloss or satin in the agreed colour.

Edwardian Casement Windows

Casement windows on Cardiff’s Edwardian semis and villas are typically softwood with more complex profile detail than sash windows. Preparation is the same: back to sound timber, primed correctly, finished to last.

Where casements have swollen from decades of paint build-up, we address this as part of the preparation. A casement that cannot close properly is a heat loss issue as well as an aesthetic one.

uPVC Window Frames

uPVC frames can be painted using specialist adhesion primers. This is a practical option when replacement is not warranted — for frames that are structurally sound but have faded, discoloured, or no longer suit the colour scheme.

A painted uPVC frame with the right primer system will typically last five to eight years. It is a significantly cheaper alternative to full replacement on post-war Cardiff semis in Llanishen and Heath.

Fascias and Soffits

Fascias and soffits are covered as part of a window painting project where they form the same painted joinery run. We also paint conservatory frames and windows using the same careful preparation methods. We include these in the scope where needed.

For the wider service, see our exterior painting page covering the full exterior repaint for Cardiff properties.

How Window Frame Painting Works

1. Assessment

We inspect each window. We note the timber condition, paint build-up, rot locations, and which sashes or casements are sticking.

2. Preparation

Paint build-up on meeting rails and sliding surfaces is stripped or planed back where it is preventing movement. Rot is treated or repaired. All surfaces are sanded to a key before priming.

3. Priming

Bare timber gets an appropriate oil-based or specialist timber primer. Previously painted timber in sound condition is primed where adhesion is a concern.

4. Undercoat

Matching undercoat builds colour depth before the finish coat.

5. Finish Coats

Two coats of the agreed exterior finish. Cut in cleanly around the glass. Putty and glazing compound are left intact and painted over where they are sound.

6. Function Check

All sashes and casements are checked to operate correctly before we close the job.

Window Frame Painting on Cardiff’s Period Properties

Original Timber Windows

Cardiff’s Victorian and Edwardian terraces contain a significant stock of original timber sash and casement windows. In Pontcanna and Canton, these are a defining feature of the streetscape. Six-over-six and two-over-two sash windows dominate the upper storeys.

These windows need careful attention. Years of painting without preparation builds up the paint film and prevents sashes from moving freely. The combination of sun exposure and Bristol Channel rainfall is hard on exterior timber.

Maintenance, Not Just Cosmetic

Proper window frame painting protects the joinery, keeps original timber in service, and avoids the cost of replacement. Paint that has failed on the sills sits on timber that has begun to degrade underneath.

Done correctly, this is a long-term maintenance investment. Properly maintained original sash windows in Cardiff can last the lifetime of the building.

Front Door and Woodwork

Window frames are often painted as part of a wider exterior joinery project. For front door painting, see our front door painting page. For all timber joinery including fences and garden structures, see our wood painting service.

Window Frame Painting Costs in Cardiff

Prices below are estimates only. Every property is different. Call 029 2271 0084 for a precise quote.

Typical Price Ranges

Window frame painting is priced per window and per elevation. The main variables are the type of window, the condition of the existing joinery, and whether rot repairs are needed.

  • Standard casement window, sound condition: £60 to £120 per window including frame
  • Victorian sash window, preparation and painting: £120 to £200 per window
  • Victorian terrace front elevation (2 sash windows, 1 bay, door): £480 to £750
  • Full house exterior window frames and fascias, 3-bed Cardiff semi: £800 to £1,400

What Affects the Cost

Rot and repair is the most common cost driver on Cardiff period properties. Sill rot treatment and repair before painting adds time and cost but is essential for a durable result.

Windows with heavy paint build-up need more preparation. First-floor sash windows require appropriate access equipment, which is included in the quote.

Paint vs Replace

Replacing original timber sash windows in Cardiff costs £600 to £1,200 per window installed. Painting them costs a fraction of that.

Properly maintained original sash windows can last the lifetime of the building. Painting is both the economical and the conservation-appropriate choice.

Part of a Larger Project

Window frames are often included as part of a full exterior painting project in Cardiff. If you are planning a full exterior repaint, window frames, fascias, and soffits are typically included in the overall scope.
