Pebbledash Painting in Cardiff

Pebbledash cannot be painted with a standard short-pile roller. A long-pile masonry roller pushes paint into the crevices between stones; a brush follows to work paint into dry areas. This process uses significantly more paint per square metre than smooth render — on a typical Heath or Llanishen semi, the upper-storey pebbledash can take a full day for preparation and two coats.

Airless spray can work on large pebbledash areas but requires thorough masking of all windows, doors, sills, and surrounding brickwork. For most Cardiff semi-detached properties, roller and brush application is the standard approach. For heavily textured surfaces, see our render painting page.

Pebbledash traps biological growth — moss, algae, and lichen — in the textured crevices. On north-facing elevations in Rhiwbina and Whitchurch, this build-up can be significant. Paint applied over damp or contaminated pebbledash will fail quickly.

We pressure wash all surfaces, then apply a mould treatment to kill biological growth before painting begins. This step directly determines how long the finished coat lasts.

Where stones have become detached, bare render patches look uneven after painting. We fill and repair these areas before painting. Where detachment is extensive, a re-dash patch may be needed to restore the texture — we advise on this at the survey stage.

Many Cardiff inter-war semis in Heath, Birchgrove, and Llanishen have pebbledash on the upper storey only. Painting the upper half requires scaffold or a tall scaffold tower. We organise access equipment as part of the job.

Changing pebbledash colour is one of the most dramatic exterior transformations available. Moving from old cream or brown to fresh grey, off-white, or green makes a significant visual difference on Cardiff’s inter-war streets. We use breathable masonry paint throughout — essential to allow moisture to escape and prevent damp.
