Pebbledash Painting in Cardiff

Pebbledash painting in Cardiff by Primrose Decor, exterior walls prepared and painted

Primrose Decor paint pebbledash across Cardiff.

Pebbledash is one of the most common exterior finishes on Cardiff’s inter-war and post-war housing — a rough, stone-embedded texture applied over a render base. We paint and refresh pebbledash surfaces using correct preparation and the right masonry paint for the surface.

What we cover:

  • Full pebbledash house repaints — all elevations
  • Partial pebbledash — upper storey or front elevation only
  • Biological growth treatment before painting
  • Pebbledash repairs — filling detached stones and loose areas before the paint coat
  • Colour changes — fresh colour over existing pebbledash

Cardiff’s 1930s and 1950s semis in Heath, Llanishen, and Whitchurch are the typical pebbledash stock. Many have the finish on the upper half only, with facing brick below.

Why Choose Primrose Decor

Correct Technique

Pebbledash needs long-pile rollers and brush work into crevices. Standard rollers leave dry patches on the low spots.

Proper Preparation

Dirty, algae-covered pebbledash fails paint adhesion. We pressure wash and treat biological growth before any paint is applied.

Local Experience

We work regularly on Cardiff’s inter-war and post-war housing stock and know what common issues to expect on this surface type.

Fully Insured

Full public liability cover on every job.

How Pebbledash Is Painted

Pebbledash cannot be painted with a standard short-pile roller. A long-pile masonry roller pushes paint into the crevices between stones; a brush follows to work paint into dry areas. This process uses significantly more paint per square metre than smooth render — on a typical Heath or Llanishen semi, the upper-storey pebbledash can take a full day for preparation and two coats.

Airless spray can work on large pebbledash areas but requires thorough masking of all windows, doors, sills, and surrounding brickwork. For most Cardiff semi-detached properties, roller and brush application is the standard approach. For heavily textured surfaces, see our render painting page.

Preparation: Washing and Treating the Surface

Pebbledash traps biological growth — moss, algae, and lichen — in the textured crevices. On north-facing elevations in Rhiwbina and Whitchurch, this build-up can be significant. Paint applied over damp or contaminated pebbledash will fail quickly.

We pressure wash all surfaces, then apply a mould treatment to kill biological growth before painting begins. This step directly determines how long the finished coat lasts.

Pebbledash Repairs Before Painting

Where stones have become detached, bare render patches look uneven after painting. We fill and repair these areas before painting. Where detachment is extensive, a re-dash patch may be needed to restore the texture — we advise on this at the survey stage.

Partial Pebbledash: Upper Storey and Bands

Many Cardiff inter-war semis in Heath, Birchgrove, and Llanishen have pebbledash on the upper storey only. Painting the upper half requires scaffold or a tall scaffold tower. We organise access equipment as part of the job.

Colour Options

Changing pebbledash colour is one of the most dramatic exterior transformations available. Moving from old cream or brown to fresh grey, off-white, or green makes a significant visual difference on Cardiff’s inter-war streets. We use breathable masonry paint throughout — essential to allow moisture to escape and prevent damp.

Pebbledash Painting Costs in Cardiff

Prices below are estimates only. Every property is different. Call 029 2271 0084 for a precise quote.

Typical Range

A 3-bed terraced with pebbledash upper half (Heath, Birchgrove) typically costs £600–£950. A 3-bed semi with pebbledash throughout runs from £900 to £1,600. A 4-bed detached fully pebbledashed property costs £1,300–£2,300. Scaffold tower hire for upper-storey work adds £200–£400.

What Drives the Price

Biological growth coverage — extensive treatment adds 10–15% to base cost. The number of detached stone areas requiring repair also affects cost. Pebbledash consumes more paint per square metre than smooth surfaces, increasing material costs on larger properties.
