Render Painting in Cardiff

Render painting in Cardiff by Primrose Decor, exterior rendered walls prepared and painted

Primrose Decor paint rendered walls across Cardiff.

Render is the smooth or sand-faced finish applied directly over brick or block. It is common on Cardiff’s inter-war semis, post-war estates, and modernised properties. We clean, prepare, and repaint rendered exterior walls using breathable masonry paint suited to the surface and the Welsh climate.

What we cover:

  • Smooth and fine-textured render — standard colour refresh or change
  • Sand-and-cement roughcast render — correct tools and paint weight
  • K-Rend and polymer render systems — thin-coat, colour-in-mix systems that can be repainted
  • Lime render on period properties — breathable coatings required
  • Surface repairs and crack filling included before painting

Cardiff’s rendered housing stock spans 1930s semis in Whitchurch and Rhiwbina, 1950s–70s estates in Llanishen and Heath, and Penarth’s Victorian and Edwardian villas where render provides coastal weather protection.

Why Choose Primrose Decor

Preparation First

Cracked, algae-covered, or damp render fails paint quickly. We clean, treat, and repair before any paint goes on.

Breathable Coatings

Rendered walls need vapour-permeable paint. Sealing moisture in causes bubbling, blistering, and early failure. We specify the right product for the render type.

Local Experience

We work regularly on Cardiff’s inter-war semis, post-war estates, and period coastal properties in Penarth.

Fully Insured

Full public liability cover on every job.

Render Painting Services in Cardiff

Smooth and Fine-Textured Render

Smooth render is the standard finish on Cardiff’s inter-war semis in Whitchurch, Rhiwbina, and Canton, and on post-war estates in Llanishen and Heath. Many of these same properties also feature pebbledash on upper storeys. Over time, it fades, stains, and develops hairline cracks from seasonal movement.

We pressure wash, fill cracks, prime bare or repaired areas, and finish with two coats of exterior masonry paint. Colour changes — fresh grey over old cream, or off-white over flaking brown — are the most common request.

Hairline Cracks and Surface Repairs

Hairline cracks form at movement joints, window surrounds, and any section where render has dried unevenly or experienced settlement. Left open, they admit moisture and extend in wet weather.

We fill hairline cracks with exterior flexible filler before priming. Larger cracks or sections of blown render are cut back to a stable edge, filled, and cured before painting.

K-Rend and Polymer Render

K-Rend and similar polymer render systems are thin-coat finishes, typically colour-in-the-mix rather than painted over. They can be recoated when the surface weathers, but require a compatible paint product — standard masonry paint may not bond adequately.

We advise on the correct product before quoting. K-Rend is common on properties built or re-rendered from the 2000s onwards, including newer builds in Pentwyn and Thornhill.

Lime Render on Period Properties

Cardiff’s Victorian and Edwardian terraces in Pontcanna, Canton, and Roath — and coastal properties in Penarth — may have original lime render. Lime render is soft and breathable. Applying non-breathable modern paint traps moisture and causes the render to fail.

We use vapour-permeable coatings — silicate masonry paints or lime-wash finishes — and advise on the correct product at survey stage.

Biological Growth Treatment

North-facing render on Cardiff properties accumulates algae, lichen, and moss, particularly in shaded sections behind hedges or under overhangs. Paint applied over live algae fails within months.

We apply a mould treatment before washing — this is included as standard on every render painting project. Shaded elevations in Whitchurch and Rhiwbina are most commonly affected.

Render Painting Costs in Cardiff

Prices below are estimates only. Every property is different. Call 029 2271 0084 for a precise quote.

Typical Range

A 3-bed terraced house with rendered front only typically costs £480–£850. A 3-bed semi with all rendered elevations, typical in Llanishen or Heath, runs from £950 to £1,700. A 4-bed detached fully rendered property costs £1,500–£2,600. Scaffold hire for two-storey work adds £300–£600.

What Drives the Price

Surface condition and extent of crack repairs are the main factors. Render type also matters — K-Rend and lime render have higher specification and product costs. The number of coats required for colour changes increases material and labour cost.
